Objective: The aim of this review was to summarize the process and results of the Region of Murcia's 2022 Report Card on Physical Activity for Children and Youth. Methods: Indicators from the Global Matrix initiative (Overall Physical Activity, Organized Sport & Physical Activity, Physical Fitness, Active Play, Active Transport, Sedentary Behaviors, Family & Peers, School, Community & Environment, and Government) were evaluated based on the best available data in the Region of Murcia. Results: Active play was the indicator with the highest grade (B+), followed by Organized Sport & Physical Activity (B) and Active Play (B). School and Family and Peers indicators obtained a C+ and C grade, respectively. Both Community and Environment and Sedentary Behaviors indicators received a D+ grade. The grade for Overall Physical Activity and Government indicators was D. Physical Fitness was the indicator with the lowest grade of this Report Card (D-). None of the indicators received an incomplete grade (INC) because of a lack of available information. Conclusions: The present Report Card offers evidence highlighting the low level of physical activity in Spanish children and adolescents living in the Region of Murcia. Further studies and surveillance efforts are urgently needed for most of the indicators analyzed, which should be addressed by researchers and the Region of Murcia's Government for this specific population. A strong commitment from the Government of the Region of Murcia is needed at all levels to promote a cultural change that will lead children and young people in this region to improve the current situation.

The 24-h movement behavior of preschoolers comprises a spectrum of activities, including moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity (MVPA), light-intensity physical activity (LPA), screen-based sedentary behavior (SCSB), non-screen-based sedentary behavior (NSCSB), and sleep. While previous research has shed light on the link between movement behaviors and children's mental health, the specific impacts on the unique demographic of Chinese preschoolers remain underexplored. This study significantly contributes to the literature by exploring how 24-h movement behavior affects the mental health of preschoolers in a Chinese context. The study involved205 Chinese preschool children (117 boys and 88 girls) between the ages of 3 and 6 years wore accelerometers to measure their LPA, MVPA, and sedentary behavior (SB), while their parents reported the time spent on sleep and SCSB. The parents also completed the Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire to assess their children's mental health. The study used compositional regression and isotemporal substitution models to examine the relationship between the various components of 24-h movement behavior and mental health. The results showed that greater NCSSB compared to MVPA, LPA, sleep, and SCSB was associated with good prosocial behavior and lower scores on externalizing problems. This highlights the potential of NSCSB as a beneficial component in the daily routine of preschoolers for fostering mental well-being. Replacing 15 min of sleep and SCSB with 15 min of NSCSB was associated with a decrease of 0.24 and 0.15 units, respectively, in externalizing problems. Reallocating 15 min of sleep to NSCSB was linked to an increase of 0.11 units in prosocial behavior. There were no significant substitution effects between LPA and MVPA time with any other movement behavior on prosocial behavior and externalizing problems. Given the positive associations observed, further longitudinal studies are necessary to explore the link between 24-h movement behavior and mental health in preschool children.

BACKGROUND: Goal setting is commonly used for promoting physical activity (PA) among insufficiently active individuals. Previous reviews have analyzed the effects of goal setting on PA, but the purpose of this systematic review was to examine the concurrent effects of goal setting on PA and psychological outcomes in insufficiently active individuals to support interventions aiming to produce sustained PA behavior change. METHODS: In this review (PROSPERO: CRD42021243970), we identified 13 studies with 1208 insufficiently active adults that reported the effects of goal-setting interventions (range 3-24 wk) on both PA and psychological outcomes (eg, self-efficacy, motivation, and affect). We used meta-analysis and narrative synthesis to analyze these effects. RESULTS: All goals used in the included studies were specific goals. Setting specific goals had a large, positive effect on PA (g [standard mean difference] = 1.11 [P < .001]; 95% confidence interval, 0.74-1.47), but only a small, positive effect on the combined psychological outcomes (g [standard mean difference] = 0.25 [P < .001]; 95% CI, 0.10-0.40). Moderator analyses revealed that interventions that did not reward participants had a significantly greater effect on PA than interventions that did provide rewards (g = 1.30 vs 0.60, respectively, P ≤ .003). No other significant moderators were found. CONCLUSION: Our review offers initial insight into the long-term effects of specific goals on PA and psychological outcomes in insufficiently active adults. Further research that examines the PA and psychological effects of goal-setting interventions and investigates a wider range of goal types could develop a stronger evidence base to inform intervention for insufficiently active individuals.

Introduction: The novel COVID-19 disease detected in 2019 widely affected individuals' social movements, likely disrupting the ability to participate in leisure-related physical activity. Because of this, participation in sedentary behavior is thought to have increased. The purpose of this study was to determine how the COVID-19 pandemic affected U.S. young adult physical activity and sedentary behavior. Methods: A total of 333 U.S. young adults (aged between 18 and 30 years) completed an online, comprehensive questionnaire during the early parts of COVID-19. Wilcoxon signed-rank tests were used to determine the change in time spent in physical activity and sedentary behavior during COVID-19 compared with that before COVID-19. Results: There was a significant decrease in physical activity minutes (p<0.0001) and a significant increase in sedentary behavior (p<0.005) during COVID-19 compared with that before COVID-19. Significant differences were found by stratifying the data by sex and relationship status. Although both males and females reduced their physical activity, only males significantly increased their time in sedentary behavior during COVID-19 compared with that before COVID-19 (p<0.05). Furthermore, married young adults significantly reduced their physical activity during COVID-19 (p<0.001), whereas single individuals did not. Single young adults saw significant increases in sedentary behavior during COVID-19 (p<0.005), whereas married individuals did not exhibit any change in sedentary behavior. Conclusions: Stay-at-home orders enforced in the U.S. during the summer of 2020 led to increases in sedentary behavior and decreases in physical activity, particularly among males and single young adults. Future studies should determine whether these behavior changes persist.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the facilitators and barriers to adopting an active lifestyle among post-treatment cancer survivors in France. METHODS: Breast, colorectal, lung, and prostate cancer survivors were recruited. Participants completed a questionnaire covering sociodemographic and clinical factors, physical activity (PA) experiences, variables from the Transtheoretical model, types of motivation, knowledge of PA benefits, barriers to PA, and quality of life. We categorized participants into 4 profiles combining PA level and sedentary behaviors. RESULTS: One hundred and seventy-five participants were included. Ordinal logistic regression revealed that the active lifestyle of cancer survivors is influenced by their professional situation (OR, 3.99; 95%CI, 1.76-9.10 and OR, 3.14; 95%CI, 1.45-6.77), the use of self-liberation (OR, 0.41; 95%CI, 0.20-0.82), helping relationships processes of change (OR, 2.45; 95%CI, 1.20-5.00), and quality of life (OR, 1.11; 95%CI, 1.04-1.18). CONCLUSIONS: Identifying the factors associated with PA and sedentary behavior among cancer survivors in France will facilitate the adaptation of programs according to a whole-person approach. Semi-structured interviews will further enhance insights in this mixed-methods study. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: Interventions aimed at promoting an active lifestyle among cancer survivors should be customized based on professional situation, the utilization of experiential behavior change processes, and perceived quality of life.

Urban parks provide connectedness to nature as a health resilience environment for promoting health. Virtual reality can provide opportunities for urban citizens to be exposed to natural elements with health benefits. The purpose was to explore the effects of actual and virtual parks on the quality of life and physical activity of urban residents. The study design was a cluster trial. Participants were healthy adults aged 20-50 years, recruited from three college campuses, and randomly assigned to two experimental groups (n = 30, 32) and one control group (n = 30). The intervention with virtual or actual parks was conducted for 30 min a session once a week for 12 weeks. Outcomes were measured using self-reported questionnaires, including the World Health Organization Quality-of-Life Scale-BREF and International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form. In total, 84 participants completed the interventions and post-intervention measures. Results showed that participants who experienced actual parks had significant increases in the social quality of life and light-intensity physical activity and had decreased body weight. Participants who experienced the virtual parks experienced a significant increase in their mental quality of life. Participants in the experimental groups of both kinds of parks had significant improvements in their self-rated health, physical and environmental quality of life, and sedentary time after the intervention. Urban parks are an important natural resource for citizens' health and physical activity promotion. Virtual parks can simulate actual parks and have similar health benefits and are thus are recommended for citizens who lack opportunities and motivation to go to actual parks.

The efficacy of interrupting prolonged sitting may be influenced by muscle activity patterns. This study examined the effects of interrupting prolonged sitting time with different muscle activity patterns on continuously monitored postprandial glycemic response. Eighteen overweight and obese men (21.0 ± 1.2 years; 28.8 ± 2.2 kg/m2) participated in this randomized four-arm crossover study, including uninterrupted sitting for 8.5 h (SIT) and interruptions in sitting with matched energy expenditure and duration but varying muscle activity: 30-min walking at 4 km/h (ONE), sitting with 3-min walking at 4 km/h (WALK) or squatting (SQUAT) every 45 min for 10 times. Net incremental area under the curve (netiAUC) for glucose was compared between conditions. Quadriceps, hamstring, and gluteal muscles electromyogram (EMG) patterns including averaged muscle EMG amplitude (aEMG) and EMG activity duration were used to predict the effects on glucose netiAUC. Compared with SIT (10.2 mmol/L/h [95%CI 6.3 to 11.7]), glucose netiAUC was lower during sitting interrupted with any countermeasure (ONE 9.2 mmol/L/h [8.0 to 10.4], WALK 7.9 mmol/L/h [6.4 to 9.3], and SQUAT 7.9 mmol/L/h [6.4 to 9.3], all p < 0.05). Furthermore, WALK and SQUAT resulted in a lower glucose netiAUC compared with ONE (both p < 0.05). Only increased aEMG in quadriceps (-0.383 mmol/L/h [-0.581 to -0.184], p < 0.001) and gluteal muscles (-0.322 mmol/L/h [-0.593 to -0.051], p = 0.022) was associated with a reduction in postprandial glycemic response. Collectively, short, frequent walking or squatting breaks effectively enhance glycemic control in overweight and obese men compared to a single bout of walking within prolonged sitting. These superior benefits seem to be associated with increased muscle activity intensity in the targeted muscle groups during frequent transitions from sitting to activity.

Physical activity and sedentary behavior, both distinct lifestyle behaviors associated with brain health, have an unclear potential relationship with brain cortical structure. This study aimed to determine the causal link between physical activity, sedentary behavior, and brain cortical structure (cortical surface area and thickness) through Mendelian randomization analysis. The inverse-variance weighted method was primarily utilized, accompanied by sensitivity analyses, to confirm the results' robustness and accuracy. Analysis revealed nominally significant findings, indicating a potential positive influence of physical activity on cortical thickness in the bankssts (ß = 0.002 mm, P = 0.043) and the fusiform (ß = 0.002 mm, P = 0.018), and a potential negative association of sedentary behavior with cortical surface area in the caudal middle frontal (ß = -34.181 mm2, P = 0.038) and the pars opercularis (ß = -33.069 mm2, P = 0.002), alongside a nominally positive correlation with the cortical surface area of the inferior parietal (ß = 58.332 mm2, P = 0.035). Additionally, a nominally significant negative correlation was observed between sedentary behavior and cortical thickness in the paracentral (ß = -0.014 mm, P = 0.042). These findings offer insights into how lifestyle behaviors may influence brain cortical structures, advancing our understanding of their interaction with brain health.

Background: Excessive sedentary time has been negatively associated with several health outcomes, and physical activity alone does not seem to fully counteract these consequences. This panorama emphasizes the essential of sedentary time interruption programs. "The Up Project" seeks to assess the effectiveness of two interventions, one incorporating active breaks led by a professional and the other utilizing a computer application (self-led), of both equivalent duration and intensity. These interventions will be compared with a control group to evaluate their impact on physical activity levels, sedentary time, stress perception, occupational pain, and cardiometabolic risk factors among office workers. Methods: This quasi-experimental study includes 60 desk-based workers from universities and educational institutes in Valparaiso, Chile, assigned to three groups: (a) booster breaks led by professionals, (b) computer prompts that are unled, and (c) a control group. The intervention protocol for both experimental groups will last 12 weeks (only weekdays). The following measurements will be performed at baseline and post-intervention: cardiometabolic risk based on body composition (fat mass, fat-free mass, and bone mass evaluated by DXA), waist circumference, blood pressure, resting heart rate, and handgrip strength. Physical activity and sedentary time will be self-reported and device-based assessed using accelerometry. Questionnaires will be used to determine the perception of stress and occupational pain. Discussion: Governments worldwide are addressing health issues associated with sedentary behavior, particularly concerning individuals highly exposed to it, such as desk-based workers. Despite implementing certain strategies, there remains a noticeable gap in comprehensive research comparing diverse protocols. For instance, studies that contrast the outcomes of interventions led by professionals with those prompted by computers are scarce. This ongoing project is expected to contribute to evidence-based interventions targeting reduced perceived stress levels and enhancing desk-based employees' mental and physical well-being. The implications of these findings could have the capacity to lay the groundwork for future public health initiatives and government-funded programs.

AIMS: Evidence regarding the modification effects of age, sex, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, or weight status on the associations of sedentary behavior (SB) with cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) is limited. Moreover, the mechanisms for the associations also remain unclear. We aimed to investigate the possible influence of these factors on the associations of SB with CVD events and whether the associations are mediated by metabolic phenotypes. METHODS: This study included 42,619 participants aged 20-74 years, recruited from the Shanghai Suburban Adult Cohort and Biobank study. SB was assessed at baseline and integrated with health information systems to predict future CVD events. Cox proportional hazards models, interaction analyses, restricted cubic splines and causal mediation analyses were used for assessments. RESULTS: Compared to those with <3 h/d sedentary time, participants having SB ≥ 5 h/d had significantly higher risks of CVD (HR[95%CI]: 1.27[1.12-1.44]), coronary heart disease (CHD, 1.35[1.14-1.60]), and ischemic stroke (IS, 1.30[1.06-1.60]). The association of CHD was more pronounced in the retired individuals than their counterparts (1.45[1.20-1.76] versus 1.06[0.74-1.52], pinteraction=0.046). When SB was expressed as a continuous variable, a 1 h/d increment in SB was positively associated with risks of CVD (1.03[1.01-1.05]), CHD (1.04[1.01-1.07]), and IS (1.05[1.01-1.08]). High-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C, proportion mediated: 12.54%, 12.23%, and 11.36%, all p<0.001), followed by triglyceride (TG, 5.28%, 4.77%, and 4.86%, all p<0.01) and serum uric acid (SUA, 3.64%, 4.24%, and 2.29%, all p<0.05) were major mediators through metabolic phenotypes. CONCLUSIONS: Higher SB was associated with elevated risks of CVD events. The detrimental effect of SB on CHD risk was more pronounced among retired individuals. Moreover, HDL-C, TG and SUA partially mediated the relationships between SB and CVD events. Our findings may have implications for preventing and controlling CVD associated with SB.

BACKGROUND: There is limited evidence of the associations between postural-derived sitting time, waist-worn derived sedentary time and children's health and the moderation effect of physical activity (PA). This study examined associations of children's device-measured sitting time with cardiometabolic health risk factors, including moderation by physical activity. METHODS: Cross-sectional baseline data from children (mean-age 8.2 ± 0.5 years) in Melbourne, Australia (2010) participating in the TransformUs program were used. Children simultaneously wore an activPAL to assess sitting time and an ActiGraph GT3X to assess sedentary time and physical activity intensity. Cardiometabolic health risk factors included: adiposity (body mass index [BMI], waist circumference [WC]), systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP, DBP), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), cholesterol, triglycerides, fasting plasma glucose (FPG), serum insulin, and 25-hydroxyvitaminD (25[OH]D). Linear regression models (n = 71-113) assessed associations between sitting time with each health risk factor, adjusted for different PA intensities (i.e. light [LIPA], moderate-vigorous intensities [MVPA], separately on each model), age, sex, adiposity, and clustering by school. Interaction terms examined moderation. The analyses were repeated using device-measured sedentary time (i.e. ActiGraph GT3X) for comparison. RESULTS: Sitting time was positively associated with SBP (b = 0.015; 95%CI: 0.004, 0.026), DBP (b = 0.012; 95%CI:0.004, 0.020), and FPG (b = 0.001; 95%CI: 0.000, 0.000), after adjusting for higher PA intensities. The association between sitting time and insulin (b = 0.003; 95%CI: 0.000, 0.006) was attenuated after adjusting for higher PA intensities. When the models were adjusted for LIPA and MVPA, there was a negative association with LDL (b=-0.001; 95%CI: -0.002, -0.000 and b=-0.001; 95%CI: -0.003, -0.000, respectively). There was a negative association of sedentary time with WCz (b=-0.003; 95%CI: -0.005, 0.000) and BMIz (b=-0.003; 95%CI: -0.006, -0.000) when the models were adjusted by MVPA. Sedentary time was positively associated with triglycerides (b = 0.001; 95%CI: 0.000, 0.001) but attenuated after adjusting for MVPA. No evidence of moderation effects was found. CONCLUSIONS: Higher volumes of sitting and sedentary time were associated with some adverse associations on some cardiometabolic health risk factors in children. These associations were more evident when sitting time was the predictor. This suggests that reducing time spent sitting may benefit some cardiometabolic health outcomes, but future experimental research is needed to confirm causal relationships and identify the biological mechanisms that might be involved. Direct observation is a ground-truth measure for physical behavior, but the high cost limits widespread use. The purpose of this study was to develop and test machine learning methods to recognize aspects of physical behavior and location from videos of human movement: Adults (N = 26, aged 18-59 y) were recorded in their natural environment for two, 2- to 3-h sessions. Trained research assistants annotated videos using commercially available software including the following taxonomies: (1) sedentary versus non-sedentary (two classes); (2) activity type (four classes: sedentary, walking, running, and mixed movement); and (3) activity intensity (four classes: sedentary, light, moderate, and vigorous). Four machine learning approaches were trained and evaluated for each taxonomy. Models were trained on 80% of the videos, validated on 10%, and final accuracy is reported on the remaining 10% of the videos not used in training. Overall accuracy was as follows: 87.4% for Taxonomy 1, 63.1% for Taxonomy 2, and 68.6% for Taxonomy 3. This study shows it is possible to use computer vision to annotate aspects of physical behavior, speeding up the time and reducing labor required for direct observation. Future research should test these machine learning models on larger, independent datasets and take advantage of analysis of video fragments, rather than individual still images.

OBJECTIVE: Sedentary behavior, falls, and fear of falling (FoF) are specific concerns for people with MS (pwMS). Considering the relatively high incidence and potential linkage, it is surprising that this triple relationship has as yet not been extensively investigated in pwMS. Thus, the present study aimed to examine the correlates of sedentary behavior with FoF and falls in pwMS. METHODS: Fifty pwMS, 30 women, were admitted to this cross-sectional study. Primary outcome measures included physical activity and sedentary behavior metrics measured by accelerometry, fall status, and FoF. Additional measures included mobility clinical tests, cognition, perceived fatigue, depression, and anxiety. The sample was divided into two subgroups according to the daily Metabolic Equivalent of Task (MET) rate scores; <1.5 was defined as sedentary, ≥1.5 were defined as non-sedentary. Multivariate analysis of variance and linear regression analyses assessed the relationships by using an alpha of 0.05. RESULTS: Sixty-four percent of the sample were classified as sedentary. The sedentary subgroup reported more FoF than the non-sedentary subgroup (32.5 (S·D. = 11.3) vs. 29.9 (S.D. = 9.5); however, no differences were found in fall status between the subgroups. No differences were found for depression, anxiety, cognition, and perceived fatigue between the subgroups. Furthermore, according to the linear regression analysis, FoF explained 23.9% of the variance pertaining to the daily MET rate when controlling for age, gender, disease duration, and disability. CONCLUSIONS: Clinicians are encouraged to incorporate the issue of FoF during standard management, which may represent an opportunity to improve care and reduce sedentary behavior in pwMS.

INTRO: We aim to investigate the relationship between social cohesion and sedentary behavior (SB), total physical activity (PA), moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA), and dietary quality. Additionally, we assess whether these associations are independent of neighborhood walkability and the food environment. METHODS: A total of 7641 participants from The Maastricht Study in the Netherlands between the ages of 40 and 75 years were analyzed. Neighborhood social cohesion was obtained by participant questionnaire completed at baseline and measured by the Dutch Livability meter. Home addresses were linked to geographic information system (GIS) data from the Geoscience and Health Cohort Consortium (GECCO) to create neighborhood exposures of walkability and food environment. A thigh worn accelerometer collected data to measure sedentary time, total daily PA, and MVPA. Dietary quality was measured with a food frequency questionnaire. Multivariate linear regression analyses were adjusted for age, sex, socioeconomic position, neighborhood walkability, and food environment. RESULTS: Those living in the highest quartile area of perceived social cohesion had statistically significant lower levels of SB (Q4 B: -13.04; 95% CI = -20.23, -5.85), higher total PA (Q4 B: 4.39; 95% CI = 1.69, 7.10), and higher MVPA (Q4 B: 2.57; 95% CI = 0.83, 4.31) and better diet quality (Q4 B: 1.12; 95% CI = 0.24, 2.01) compared to the lowest quartile independent of walkability and food environment. Similar results were found using the Livability meter. CONCLUSION: We discovered neighborhood social cohesion as an important obesogenic determinant that should be considered in policymaking to encourage higher levels of PA and higher diet quality.

PURPOSE: Increased sedentary behavior during cancer treatment is common, which may have negative long-term health effects. Understanding patients' experience of sedentary behavior during neo- or adjuvant cancer treatment may be crucial in developing effective support for patients to reduce sedentary behavior. Therefore, the present study aimed to explore sedentary behavior in patients undergoing neo- or adjuvant cancer treatment. METHODS: Eleven interviews were conducted with patients undergoing treatment for breast, prostate, and colorectal cancer. Participants were recruited from a university hospital in Sweden. Interviews were analyzed phenomenologically, and the results were presented as descriptions of the phenomenon sedentary behavior. RESULTS: The overarching theme of sedentary behavior during cancer treatment was that sedentary behavior is experienced through being physically active or not. Furthermore, experiences of sedentary behavior increased with side effects and varied depending on the type and phase of cancer treatment, meaning that sedentary behavior is an adjustment to side effects. Additionally, sedentary behavior was influenced by life circumstances and social interaction, such as work status and having social support. Finally, sedentary behavior is influenced by strategies and motivations, such as the perceived benefits of physical activity and self-image. CONCLUSIONS: Sedentary behavior is difficult for patients to discern, which is why health care personnel may need to help patients by increasing awareness of the negative impact of sedentary behavior in a way that does not stigmatize patients. Furthermore, developing support that targets periods with more side effects and helping patients reduce sedentary behavior throughout changing life circumstances may be helpful.

Sedentary behavior (SB) and physical activity (PA) exert opposing effects on inflammatory markers. This study examined the associations of a more subdivided combination of PA and SB with high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP). Using the 2014-2019 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, this cross-sectional study analyzed 20,541 adults. The independent variables were SB, defined as ≥10 h of sitting per day, and three domains of PA: occupational PA (OPA) during work, leisure-time PA (LPA) during leisure time, and transportation PA (TPA) or active commuting. The dependent variable was hs-CRP ≥ 1.0 mg/L. Besides exploring the individual association of SB and each PA with hs-CRP, the combined association of SB and each PA with hs-CRP was also examined using multiple logistic regression. The analyses indicated that concurrent exposure to SB and OPA (odds ratio [OR] 1.36, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.02-1.80) significantly raised the likelihood of increased hs-CRP, while SB without LPA (OR 1.26, 95% CI 1.11-1.41) or TPA (OR 1.19, 95% CI 1.08-1.31) significantly increased risk of higher hs-CRP, compared to their respective reference. The absence of non-occupational PA such as LPA or TPA combined with SB was associated with the increased hs-CRP risk, whereas OPA increased the risk when present concurrently with SB. Reducing SB and OPA while increasing LPA and TPA, is necessary to reduce inflammatory conditions.

BACKGROUND: Sedentary behavior has been demonstrated to be a modifiable factor for several chronic diseases, while coffee consumption is believed to be beneficial for health. However, the joint associations of daily sitting time and coffee consumption with mortality remains poorly understood. This study aimed to evaluate the independent and joint associations of daily sitting time and coffee intakes with mortality from all-cause and cardiovascular disease (CVD) among US adults. METHODS: An analysis of a prospective cohort from the 2007-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey of US adults (n = 10,639). Data on mortality were compiled from interview and physical examination data until December 31, 2019. Daily sitting time was self-reported. Coffee beverages were from the 24-hour diet recall interview. The main outcomes of the study were all-cause and cardiovascular disease mortality. The adjusted hazard ratios [HRs] and 95% confidence intervals [CI] were imputed by Cox proportional hazards regression. RESULTS: Among 10,639 participants in the study cohort, there were 945 deaths, 284 of whom died of CVD during the follow-up period of up to 13 years. Multivariable models showed that sitting more than 8 h/d was associated with higher risks of all-cause (HR, 1.46; 95% CI, 1.17-1.81) and CVD (HR, 1.79; 95% CI, 1.21-2.66) mortality, compared with those sitting for less than 4 h/d. People with the highest quartile of coffee consumption were observed for the reduced risks of both all-cause (HR, 0.67; 95% CI, 0.54-0.84) and CVD (HR, 0.46; 95% CI, 0.30-0.69) mortality compared with non-coffee consumers. Notably, joint analyses firstly showed that non-coffee drinkers who sat six hours or more per day were 1.58 (95% CI, 1.25-1.99) times more likely to die of all causes than coffee drinkers sitting for less than six hours per day, indicating that the association of sedentary with increased mortality was only observed among adults with no coffee consumption but not among those who had coffee intake. CONCLUSIONS: This study identified that sedentary behavior for more than 6 h/d accompanied with non-coffee consumption, were strongly associated with the increased risk of mortality from all-cause and CVD.

Background: The world's first 24-h movement guidelines for adults were released on 15 October 2020 in Canada, though evidence of their associations with health indicators in young adults is sparse. This study aimed to report the prevalence of meeting the 24-h movement guidelines and associations with depressive symptoms in a sample of Chinese university students. Methods: Cross-sectional data from 1,793 Chinese university students (mean age = 20.7 years, 63.6% female) were used. Sociodemographic information, movement behaviors (physical activity, sedentary behavior, and sleep duration), and depressive symptoms were collected using a self-reported questionnaire. Results: The prevalence of meeting the 24-h movement guidelines was 27.8% in Chinese university students. Logistic regression results show that compared to those who met the 24-h movement guidelines, odds ratio (OR) for depressive symptoms in those who met fewer recommendations contained in the 24-h movement guidelines were significantly higher (OR for none = 3.4, 95% CI [2.1-5.5], p < 0.001; OR for one = 2.7, 95% CI [2.0-3.8], p < 0.001; OR for two = 1.5, 95% CI [1.1-2.1], p = 0.013). Conclusion: The prevalence of meeting the 24-h movement guidelines in Chinese university students was relatively low and should be enhanced through multiple strategies. Meeting the 24-h movement guidelines was associated with lower risk for depression in Chinese young adults. It is suggested that moving more, sitting less and sleeping well in this population may reduce the occurrence of depression.

Objective: and Rationale: Obesity is a health challenge for adults with Down syndrome. Therefore, a physical activity promotion program is required to prevent or reduce obesity in adults with this condition. However, there is a lack of evidence of useful risk reduction initiatives. The objective of this study was to suggest a rationale for behaviors that should replace time of inactivity to reduce obesity in Japanese adults with Down syndrome. Methods: The participants were adults with Down syndrome, aged 18-48 years, living in Japan. The snowball sampling method was used. To detect an effect size of 0.20 for body mass index using an F-test, 80 participants were required, generating a statistical power of 0.8 and a risk level of 0.05. Survey items included sex, age, height, weight, body mass index, and physical activity (min/d). Physical activity was categorized by intensity and further divided into ambulatory and non-ambulatory activities. The body mass index categories were compared using analysis of covariance. An isotemporal substitution model was used to confirm the interdependence of behaviors. Results: Half of the participants were obese, with a body mass index of 25 kg/m2 or higher. The obese group had significantly fewer light physical activity, moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, and ambulatory moderate-to-vigorous physical activity times than the non-obese group. Replacing 10 min of sedentary behavior with ambulatory moderate-to-vigorous physical activity was significantly associated with a lower body mass index. Conclusions: This study suggests a rationale for behaviors that should replace time of inactivity to reduce obesity in adults with Down syndrome. Specifically, replacing 10 min of sedentary behavior with ambulatory moderate-to-vigorous physical activity time may contribute to obesity reduction.
